Exploring Matt Mochary's Approach to Building and Scaling a Successful Business
Welcome to the second issue of the Business Building series, where we'll be diving deeper into the world of CEO business coaching and comparing three prominent methods: Verne Harnish's Scaling Up Method, Matt Mochary's Mochary Method, and Gino Wickman's EOS Method.
Estimated read time: 3 minutes
What is unique with Mochary?
Last issue, we briefly introduced Matt Mochary and his approach to business coaching. Mochary's method is unique in that he recommends learning by bringing in an expert to act rather than just having the CEO learn from the coach.
This method works well for tech CEOs who might not have time to go to long coaching sessions.
One of the key tools that Mochary uses is the OKR (Objectives and Key Results) system. This system is commonly used in the tech industry, and Mochary presents it in a short and simple format that is easy for tech CEOs to understand and implement.
Additionally, the forms used in Mochary's method are accessible using Google Docs, which are commonly used in the tech industry and can be easily duplicated in a company's own system.
Here is a link to the forms.
Mochary's experience as a "one-day-a-week shadow CEO" at companies such as NeoReach, Brex, OpenAl, Clearbit, Bolt and AngelList, has given him a unique perspective on how to run and grow a business, which he incorporates in his coaching method.
He has been able to transfer his knowledge to the founding CEOs in a few months, allowing them to run the system as well as he could, thus taking back over. This experience also allows him to debunk many of the myths that tech CEOs and investors hold about one another, which he incorporates in his coaching sessions.
The Mochary Method is divided into six components:
The Beginning: This component covers the best practices for starting a company and launching a team.
2. Individual Habits: This component covers the most crucial habits that are essential for an individual to be effective in a company. This section covers organization, effectiveness, and personal well-being, and encourages individuals to model these habits for others to adopt.
3. Group Habits: This component covers the most crucial habits that are essential for a group to be effective. This section covers decision-making, impeccable agreements, transparency, conscious leadership, issue identification and conflict resolution, customer empathy, and company culture.
4. Infrastructure: This component covers the tools that are used to facilitate company effectiveness such as the company folder system, wiki, goal-tracking system, areas of responsibility, and key performance indicators.
5. Collaboration: This component reviews what a solid organizational structure looks like, as well as techniques to keep an organization working well together.
6. Processes: This component covers the systems used for each major function of the company such as fundraising, recruiting, and sales and marketing.
Mochary's approach is based on the idea that building and scaling a successful business requires a focus on both the individual and the group. He encourages individuals to focus on their personal habits, while also promoting group habits that are essential for a company's success. Additionally, his emphasis on infrastructure and collaboration ensures that the company has the tools and structure in place to support its growth.
In the next issue, we'll be comparing Mochary's method to the other two popular methods and discussing how each can help you achieve your business goals. Stay tuned for more insights on how to navigate the world of CEO business coaching.
