Accountability Chart: Bringing Clarity to Your Company Structure

Contrary to MBA belief, the EOS system does not believe in an organizational chart for structuring a company; instead, it utilizes a less hierarchical and more agile tool: an accountability chart.

The EOS accountability chart is essentially a supercharged organizational chart that defines and visualizes an organization's structure.

This chart consists of seats, instead of regular job titles, and in these seats, individuals have specific accountabilities instead of a typical job description.

The main difference here is that one seat can have a mixture of jobs/roles within the company, with every seat having five accountabilities.

The Accountability Chart is Set to Evolve with Your Company

In an accountability chart, it’s not uncommon for a person to sit in multiple seats at once, especially in the beginning.

As the company scales and new people are hired, the seats and their associated accountabilities diversify from this one person to the newly hired people.

As an example of this, let's imagine a co-founder’s role in a company’s early phase:

  • Year 1. He sits on multiple seats — handling operations, customer service, and finance.

  • Year 2. As the company grows, new hires fill the previously combined customer service and finance seats, allowing him to concentrate solely on operations.

  • Year 3. With further growth, even the operations seat becomes too broad, creating specialized seats within this theme, such as logistics and process management.

Unlike a normal organizational chart, the accountability chart is more agile and flexible. It’s designed to change upon each quarterly review, adapting without bigger complications.

This flexibility allows a company to evolve much more effectively.

Nothing is etched in stone.

Now, in the photos below, I’ve shared a glimpse, of the actual accountability chart used in my business, Makman Technology Consulting.

We also have operations, sales, and marketing seats in our accountability chart, I’ll keep sharing this as we continue the series next week.
