72% of entrepreneurs have some kind of mental-health issue

Welcome to the fifth issue of the Business Building series, where we'll see what's common between the three most prominent methods in the first step a CEO needs to take to work on his business instead of in his business.

Estimated read time: 3 minutes

What is the first step?

You can't transform your business if you don't transform yourself. So the first step is to work on you.

The three: Mochary, Wickman and Harnish have slightly different approaches for this.

Mochary focuses on time, and being wary of fear and anger. Harnish has a self organizer similar to the bullet journal method, and Wickman has a specific program called EOS Life.

Also, the three programs adopt some sort of an assessment, Verne points to the Lencioni team assessment, Gino points to the Kolbe assessment and Matt does this during his direct CEO coaching trying to understand his coachees and helping them towards radical self-acceptance.

The article below discusses a study out of UC Berkeley that says a whopping 72% of entrepreneurs have some kind of mental-health issue.

And we don't want that person to be at the helm, so it has to be fixed before we do any thing else.

I was working in a fortune 500 more than a decade ago, and I was promoted into a leadership role. Before that promotion, they have to run you into an assessment to prepare you to understand yourself and your team. It was the controversial MBTI assessment.

It was the beginning of a long journey over almost 10 years and 10 assessments:

  • MBTI

  • DISC

  • Enneagram

  • Big 5

  • Kolbe

  • Bryq

  • Birkman

  • The GC Index

  • Emotional Intelligence (EIQ)

  • The Reiss Motivation Profile

And many others.

What is the best? your mileage may vary, but in my case:

MBTI is superficial but is a good introduction, the game changer is understanding the Jungian framework behind it, reading John Bebe's books and videos is one way to understand the functions and will help you understand yourself and people on a deep level and deal with people without the need to run the assessment that has a high ratio of error.

DISC and Big 5 were a meh to me.

Enneagram was the best for personal development. The paid version gives you actionable advice to grow and mature.

Kolbe was the most surprising, it helped me embrace my impulsiveness while most other advice was the apposite, it falls within the core of radical self-acceptance. It was an eye-opener.

Birkman is the most comprehensive and details, it will tell you what careers and domains are best for you, and how to avoid burnout.

Bryq was best for recruitment. EIQ was best for making me a vulnerable leader, I still have to do a lot and this assessment made me spend thousands on an emotional intelligence coach and was the best to keep my mental health in check as a founder.

The GC Index is best for understanding your impact within a team or a project, and it is best for forming teams, it is also a great tool to create trust and rapport within a team or between you and your customers.

I learned about Reiss from the book agile people, it is great for knowing how to reward yourself, your loved ones, and your team.

All in all, go understand yourself and your team and prepare yourself for the next issue where we start laying the first block for your business building.
